Ladder Inspection Checklist

General Condition

  • Ladder is clean and free of oil, grease, or slippery substance
  • No cracks, splits, bends, or warping in rails or rungs
  • No missing, loose, or damaged rungs, steps or braces
  • No corrosion, rust, or deterioration
  • No sharp edges, splinters, or protrusions
  • Ladder feet are intact, slip-resistant, and securely attached
  • Label and Duty Rating are intact and legible

Hardware & Mechanisms

  • Step ladders - Spreaders and locking devices function properly step ladders
  • Extension ladders - locks engage securely and hold position
  • Extension ladders - Rope and pulley system (if present) is intact and operational
  • Rivets, bolts, and welds are secure and undamaged

Mobile Ladder Stand Inspection Checklist

  • Inspect handrails – make sure they are tight and secure.
  • Inspect ladders for wear, damage, and corrosion – e.g., rust, worn or broken treads, broken welds, bent parts and frame members.
  • Check alignment – ladder should be straight and square and should sit level on the floor.
  • Inspect spring-loaded casters – make sure the sleeve is straight.
  • Inspect and test lock steps – make sure locking mechanism is working properly (engages and disengages).
  • Inspect rubber pads on all four legs – check for excessive or uneven wear, replace as necessary.
  • Check for labels (duty rating, watch your step, engage lockstep, use handrail) – affixed and legible on the front steps and handrails.

IF LADDER DOES NOT PASS INSPECTION FOR USE, YOUR SUPERVISOR AND THE SAFETY DEPARTMENT MUST BE CONTACTED IMMEDIATELY AND LADDER MUST BE REMOVED FROM SERVICE
